Drug Uses
Lipitor helps to reduce the amount of cholesterol and certain fatty substances in your blood. An excessive amount of cholesterol and fats along the walls of your arteries can lead to atherosclerosis. Because of this disease blood flow is decreased and, consequently, decreases the oxygen supply to your heart, brain, and other parts of your body. Lowering your blood level of cholesterol and fats is indispensable as it may help to prevent heart attacks, strokes, heart disease, and angina (Chest pain).
How Taken
Lipitor comes as a tablet to be taken in by mouth. Take the medicine once a day with or without a meal. It's better to take the medicine about the same time each day. You may be prescribed a lower dose at the beginning of your treatment and then your dose will be gradually increased. Even if you feel better, you shouldn't stop taking Lipitor without first getting an approval of your health care supervisor. Be aware that you should have a low cholesterol and low fat diet while using the drug.
Missed Dose
If you happen to miss a dose, you should take it as soon as you remember. But if it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
More Information
Remember that taking Lipitor together with alcohol may increase the risk of liver damage. That's why it's better to stay away from alcohol or take it in moderate doses during treatment with Lipitor. Grapefruit taken together with Lipitor may cause certain interactions, which may lead to serious side effects. Consult with your doctor on the use of alcohol, grapefruit and grapefruit juice.
Storage
Keep the drug at room temperature. Lipitor should be kept out of reach of children and pets. Store the medicine away from heat and moisture.
